The rich history of Cabo San Lucas began many years before becoming the top-rated tourist destination that it is today. Thinking about how many things happened in Los Cabos will make your experience more interesting and valuable.
Here is a brief history of Cabo San Lucas
All Los Cabos area, or what we know nowadays as Baja California Sur, was inhabited since approximately 13.000 BCE by the Pericú People, the Mexican natives that lived in this land for thousands of years until the first Spanish ship arrived on the coasts of Baja California, specifically in the Bay of La Paz, in the year 1534.
This first ship was captained by Hernan Cortez, which is why the sea that is in the inner part of the peninsula was named the Sea of Cortez. Even though Hernan Cortez arrived in Baja California in the year 1534, it wasn’t until 1537 when Francisco de Ulloa, one of the navigators of the ship, visited Cabo San Lucas for the first time and gave it the name of San Jose del Cabo.
The first Spanish permanent settlement in Cabo San Lucas was set more than 150 years after Cortez’s ships sailed near Los Cabos region, in 1697 when a group of Jesuit missionaries sent from Spain formed a small fishing village that they named Estero de Las Palmas de San José del Cabo.
After the Spanish, many ships from other parts of the world visited Baja California Sur since La Paz became a stop for the busiest trade routes.
During those years, Los Cabos was far away from being a tourist destination, it became a popular fishing spot because of the great diversity of sea life in the area, but English and Dutch pirates that visited the coast looking for treasure were a problem during decades.
Finally, during the Mexican-American war, Baja California, and the peninsula, were officially named part of Mexico, which opened the doors for a slow but steady economic development in the area.
How did Cabo San Lucas become such a tourist destination?
For a long time, Cabo San Lucas remained a small village but the beauty of its beaches began to attract wealthy Americans in the 20th century, especially businessmen, actors, and actresses from California like Bing Crosby and Desi Arnaz, that wanted more privacy during their vacations.
This boosted Los Cabo’s tourism industry. A few resorts and hotels were built in the 50s and the Transpeninsular highway was inaugurated in the year 1974, allowing tourists to get to Los Cabos by car. Cabo San Lucas quickly became a popular destination in Mexico and now we welcome thousands of tourists from all over the world that are seeking adventure or just a relaxing vacation.
